Since COVID-19 and the new norm of distributed work, Zoom video conferencing has shot up 20x from 10 million to upwards of 200 million participants per day. To that end, U.S. companies host more than 11 million video conference calls extending to 30+ minutes per call. That’s 330+ million minutes, which means companies are responsible for creating, capturing, and retaining more than 99 billion words (at 300 WPM) daily. If only 10% of those conversations prove valuable, that’s still 9 billion words or 18 million pages worth of information.

Don’t Let Meaningful Insights Go to Waste

More than eighteen million pages worth of communications become absolutely irrelevant because the data is not searchable. The discussions live and die on those calls, or at best, the insights fragment into millions of different notes documented by individuals on the call. This is especially true if the participants are not using a collaborative notes app like bundleIQ.

Thankfully there is an innovative and straightforward solution to this problem. Like most modern solutions involving Artificial Intelligence, it replaces human effort by transcribing audio to text.

A Real-world Example of How It Helped Me Today

I brought on a new developer to optimize our Elasticsearch environment before the launch of ‘IQ, the AI-powered Chrome Extension. Part of the onboarding process was to get the backend running locally on his machine, which is not a trivial task. Naturally, some questions came up that I couldn’t answer, and this is where I turned to bundleIQ to offer a solution.

Back in August, we had a development Zoom call that I recorded. A screen share was part of the plan, where we would step through setting up our local backend environment as a team. It was over an hour-long call that thankfully I transcribed and saved as a note in bundleIQ because I knew there would be a day that the information would be useful in sentence form.

The Use Case

The request went something like, “There should be a REDIS URL or ES connection.” Had I not converted the Zoom call to a note, at least 45 minutes to an hour of company time would’ve been wasted watching the video to find a needle in a haystack. And the opportunity cost of pulling another engineer from deep thought was not a viable option.

Because I implemented this knowledge management strategy, it took me less than a minute to find a couple of paragraphs worth of content that positively supported his efforts. Voila! Just like that, the concept validated itself and having the Zoom call saved as a note in the bundleIQ “Development” bundle proved valuable.

How to Use AI to Transcribe a Video Conference Audio File

  1. Record the call
  2. Use an AI transcription service; there are several. I have been using Otter.ai because they give you 600 minutes for free.
  3. Copy and paste the text from the transcription into a bundleIQ note
  4. Smile! Because your video conference insights are now searchable and available to use when you need them most.
